Duke Energy Foundation grants $734,000 to support workforce development in Florida

ST. PETERSBURG (Fla.), July 15, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Duke Energy has invested $734,000 in strategic workforce development programs and education programs in Florida.
The Duke Energy Foundation grants will assist students and job seekers from underrepresented groups such as women or minorities to prepare for employment in the energy sector. This support will help to expand and strengthen the state's skilled workforce.
Melissa Seixas (Dow Energy Florida state president) stated that grants "support vital programs and help create a diverse workforce necessary to strengthen our communities, economies today and into the future."
The University of Florida and its Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering are among this year's recipients. The University of Florida will receive a $100,000 grant to establish the Energy Sustainability Technology and Resiliency Testing Center and Certificate Program.
"We are grateful to Duke Energy for their generosity and foresight in making the gift," said Dr. Jonathan Scheffe (associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at the University of Florida). It will open up a new path for students interested in pursuing a career in engineering sustainability and resilience. Students will learn about climate-friendly, state-of the-art technologies that are in line with future energy needs.
The grant will be used by the university to provide scholarships for students pursuing a Sustainable and Resilient Engineering Engineering Certificate at the University of Florida's Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.
The Duke Energy Foundation administers all grants. This foundation invests in workforce programs in energy to help build the next generation of workers, as well create access to training and job skill programs that meet the needs of today's communities.

Pasco-Hernando State College Foundation – Elevating Engineering Achievement and Career Attainment in Pasco and Hernando Counties ($40,000).
Pinellas County Urban League Inc.- Duke Energy Lineworker Diversity Initiative (15,000)
Project Prosper - A financial literacy program that caters to the unique needs and wants of refugees and immigrants ($10,000).
St. Petersburg College Foundation – Electrical Lineworker Program ($50,000).
University of South Florida Foundation – Call Me MISTER initiative to increase the number of male teachers of colour in local elementary schools ($50,000).
South Florida State College Hardee Campus: Increasing Training Opportunities for Electrical-Lineworker Students by Expanding Training Capacity, Improving Safety ($30,000).
